I have an instant heirloom for my son. My great-great uncle loved watches, and he had an interesting Gueblin in his collection. It's a gold auto with an enamel painted face. The face depicts what I thought was a mermaid because of the blue-green background.

A few years back, I emailed Gueblin. Turns out, it's not a mermaid but a maiden. And not just any maiden, but Virgo. Gueblin had a line of zodiac-themed watches. Last year, my son was born in September (er, the 11th, actually, about 10 miles from you-know-where), which makes him a Virgo.

Here ya go, kid.

Currently my tastes lean toward the tool watches like Kobold and Rolex's Seadweller, Sub., and Explore. So for a "sofisticated" fancy legacy... how about a Chronoswiss Opus or Pathos. Of course as current auctions show you really can't go wrong with a Patek, either. I really think I would want the watch that was worn daily by my loved one, regardless of appraised value. That said, if it was a toss between a Timex and a Patek...I'm not stupid, just sentimental.
Btw, love the site.
